CHICAGO (Oct. 29, 2018) – BPI group, global experts in leadership, talent, and career transition, today released its latest Executive Employment Trends Report, detailing executive hiring trends from the past five quarters. The report offers visibility into the current executive job market with analyses of the average length of an executive job search and the various factors involved, such as base salary, education level, and age. The findings of the report are based on a nationwide survey of BPI group’s Executive Advisory Services (EAS) clients who completed their job searches between Q3 2017 and Q3 2018.

“Our findings report that this past year, most of our executive clients landed a new job within an organization, as opposed to launching their own business or retiring,” said Steve Spires, Managing Director, Career Services, at BPI group. “This is a reflection of the strong transition market and the unique employment landscape we’ve seen over the past five decades.” Additional key findings include:

  • BPI group EAS clients landed new roles in an average of 4.9 months, which is significantly less time than the national average executive job search length of 6.9 months.
  • More highly paid, educated, experienced, older executives continue to take longer to transition; however, the range in time is significantly lower than it was five years ago.
  • Networking and one-to-one touchpoints account for the majority of new opportunities and landings, consistently 65% over the past five years, and rising to about 70% most recently.
  • The majority of executives in transition are pursuing and landing in similar or better re-employment, rather than entrepreneurial pursuits or leisure-based retirement.

Susan G. Gallagher, BPI group U.S. President & Chief Executive Officer, said, “Landing trends among our EAS clients are reflective of the strong economy and a record-low unemployment rate. Yet, our executives continue to land faster than the national average, as we are committed to meeting the needs of our executive career transition clients.”
